The Bedford Store – c. 1838

612 Old Post Road
Country store, post office and for many years an antique shop, this small, gambrel roof structure originally stood on Pound Ridge Road and is believed to be the store built by J. W. Husted. It was moved to its current site next to the Old Burying Ground in 1890. Dr. George T. Coopernail related that during its move, the building became mired in ice and snow causing travelers to maneuver around it.

H. G. Arnold, M. E. Stead and Hyman Glasser are among the proprietors who operated a general store in the building. Mr. Glasser sold it to Randall Trumpy, an antiques dealer who occupied the building until 1968 when the Bedford Historical Society purchased it from Mrs. Trumpy after his death. After converting it to office space, it was rented to a variety of local businesses—real estate, attorney, travel agent and architect.

In 2008, after extensive restoration and renovation, and the discovery of over 80 old bottles buried in the crawlspace from the earlier general stores, the Bedford Historical Society moved its offices into the building allowing visitors greater accessibility to the Society, its archives and educational programs.
