Volunteer, Internship & Employment Opportunities

The Bedford Historical Society relies on volunteers, interns, staff and our Board of Directors to open our two museums, participate in our educational tours, prepare exhibits, organize special events and handle a varied assortment of tasks essential to our mission.

We are always looking for volunteers no matter what age, background or amount of time you have to offer. If you’re interested in getting involved, please call us at (914) 234-9751 or send us an email at info@bhsny.org.

The following opportunities are available at this time

Undergraduate and Graduate Internships

Students majoring in history or museum studies may apply to work on research projects, collections care and cataloging or museum education programs. In general these internships are designed to help you meet requirements for your course of study and as such are unpaid. However, funds may be available to cover your travel expenses. Please send a resume and cover letter stating the area in which you wish to intern to jobs@bhsny.org

Museum Docents at the Court House and School House

Welcome visitors to Bedford’s historic 1787 County Court House and tour them through the Bedford Museum or show them how students were taught at the 1829 Stone School House. Your commitment can be as little as two hours a month or as much as you desire. Occasional substitutes are also needed. Training is provided. The museum is open Thursday, Friday & Saturday from April through the first week in December. Hours to be determined but preferably noon to 4 PM. Bring a friend! It’s more fun with two.

Educational Program Tour Guides & Role Players

Volunteers are also sought to act as tour guides or to role play in our interactive educational programs. Attorneys or those with some legal background are needed to play the part of the Justice of the Peace and those with a booming voice to play the Constable. Also needed are women to be the School Mistress or men as a School Master. The scripts are written and easy to learn. All you need is a desire to play the part and patience with the school children!
